Research Behind
re[start] space
Purpose:

A peaceful space intended to challenge an individual in personal growth.

Background:
The design of this pace was inspired by a multisensory room, also known as a Snoezelen room. “Snoezelen" room is a combination of two Dutch words that mean "to explore" and "to relax". The purpose of a multisensory room is to draw attention to all five senses which aids in brining awareness to one’s surroundings instead of their thoughts and emotions. It enables individuals to explore their surroundings and relax their mind.
Evidence of Impact
01
Multisensory rooms have been used for ADHD, dementia, mental health, etc. Several studies have claimed that the safeness the pace provides reduces stress and anxiety, (Baillon et al, 2018, Zielke 2023).
Another study established a multisensory room in an inpatient psych unit where distress levels were measured before and after the room was used. There was a significant decrease in distress levels after use. Measurement of distress included anxiety, restlessness, agitation, and distress, (Chalmers et al. 2012).

02
From an educational standpoint, a university implemented a multisensory space and found a significant improvement in mental well-being among staff and students. (Dr. Lisa Edwards and Dr. Gill Barlow, 2020).
04
Multisensory rooms impact the body as a mindfulness-based intervention (MBI). A MBI teaches “mindfulness skills to increase intentional attention and to develop a different relationship with one’s thoughts,” (Shapero et al, 2018). By using the five senses in this space, an individual can intentionally focus on elements outside their mind, relax, and explore.
